The holiday season is coming. This holiday season can be heartwarming. But sometimes it can also cause heart problems. Excessive drinking in the holiday parties is not a good idea. Any act that causes the disruption of the normal heart rhythm must be avoided. It is said that around 35 % hearts related case in the emergency room during holiday season are recognized as Holiday Heart Syndrome.

This syndrome is rarely heart threatening. But most of the times this syndrome is scary.

What happens is the people who otherwise are healthy and do not have any heart related problem celebrate holiday like Christmas or New Year. They already are under a little holiday stress. Because of having fun or relieving the stress they drink more drinks. This extra alcohol triggers the heart, which then enters an abnormal heart rhythm. The most common among this abnormal heart rate disease is Atrial Fibrillation

Most of the people are in stress because they have to spend some extra dollars during the holiday, to relieve this stress if they drink more alcohol they have to spend a lot on their hearts as well.

Every New Year and Christmas holiday heart cases shoots up. The emergency rooms are filled with symptoms of light-headedness and palpitations. Most often these emergency cases are of the college going guys who are otherwise healthy. They rush from one holiday party to another and thus indulge in booze and food.

Luckily holiday heart Atrial fibrillation mostly normalize automatically in 24 hours. Occasionally if it is not resolved the doctor has to admit the person to the hospital. He has to prescribe medicines to slow down heart rate. In some extreme cases an electric shock may also be required to normalize the rate of heart.

This syndrome mostly takes place in those who normally either do not drink or only rarely drink. But on holidays they go on binge drinking.

Men are at increased risk compared with women. Most of the cases of holiday heart syndrome appear suddenly and after some time normalize itself. Alcohol is a famous trigger of heart related problems, if it is consumed in too much, even in otherwise healthy individual. The excessive amount can vary from 1-5 drinks for different individuals.

One should be aware if the heart beat goes wild for more than half an hour and doesn’t seems to calming down. He should identify if he had drunk more than usual. Especially if somebody is having short breathed he must got himself checked by the doctor. One can prevent this situation by drinking in moderation and recognizing the alarming signs given by the heart.

In short have happy holidays but do a favor to your heart by not drinking in excess. I can assure you that it isn’t worth it!
